Bringing young musicians together through music, creativity and cultural understanding

Mo i Rana, Norway | 11–12 April 2026
On 11–12 April 2026, approximately 30 young participants gathered in Mo i Rana for the ÁRRAN Youth Seminar, a two-day educational and artistic programme organised by Rødøy Orkesterforening in collaboration with NordSync Project.
The seminar brought together young musicians and professional performing artists from Norway and Sweden, creating opportunities for musical collaboration, creative exploration and cultural learning.
The activities were developed in connection with ÁRRAN – A Space for Dialogue and Community, an interdisciplinary music-theatre production exploring Sámi culture, minority languages, identity and the importance of cultural dialogue in contemporary Nordic society.
Learning Through Music and Collaboration
The seminar combined practical music-making with encounters between young participants and professional artists.
Through ensemble activities, workshops and shared artistic experiences, the young musicians explored different approaches to musical expression, collaboration and storytelling.
An important part of the seminar was introducing participants to the relationship between music and cultural identity. By connecting artistic activities with the themes of ÁRRAN, the programme encouraged young people to reflect on how language, history and cultural traditions shape the communities in which we live.
Rather than approaching cultural heritage exclusively as something belonging to the past, the seminar emphasised that Sámi languages and cultures are living and evolving parts of contemporary Nordic society.
This perspective is central to the wider ÁRRAN project, which uses music and storytelling to create dialogue about cultural diversity, minority rights and shared history.
Working Alongside Professional Artists
The seminar was connected to the artistic development programme NordSync Lab #3, which brought together professional musicians, vocal artists and theatre practitioners from Northern Norway and Sweden.
The professional artistic team included Carina Henriksson, Roger Norén, Kristin Solberg, Maria Frolova, Stepan Frolov and Iida Alina Poijärvi.
Their interdisciplinary work combined classical and traditional instruments, vocal performance, theatrical storytelling and improvisation.
For the young participants, the connection to an active professional production offered an opportunity to experience how different artistic disciplines can contribute to a shared creative process.
The seminar also highlighted the value of collaboration between professional musicians and voluntary music organisations, strengthening opportunities for young people to participate in regional cultural life.

A Meeting Place Across Generations
One of the main ambitions of the seminar was to create a meeting place where young musicians could develop their artistic skills while encountering broader cultural and social perspectives.
The programme encouraged collaboration, curiosity and mutual understanding, demonstrating how music can become a common language between people with different experiences and backgrounds.
The seminar took place alongside the public presentation of ÁRRAN on 12 April at Rana Kulturskole, connecting the educational activities with the wider artistic production.
By combining youth participation, professional artistic development and cultural dialogue, the initiative demonstrated how regional music education can contribute to a more inclusive and interconnected Nordic cultural community.
Building Future Opportunities
The ÁRRAN Youth Seminar forms part of Rødøy Orkesterforening’s and NordSync Project’s broader commitment to strengthening music education, youth participation and cross-border cultural collaboration in Northern Norway.
The experience provides a foundation for further educational initiatives in which young musicians work alongside professionals, discover new artistic approaches and engage with the cultural diversity of the Nordic region.
