ÁRRAN – A Space for Dialogue and Community

Music, storytelling and cultural dialogue across borders

Mo i Rana, Norway | 9–12 April 2026

ÁRRAN – A Space for Dialogue and Community is an interdisciplinary performing arts project exploring Sámi culture, minority languages, identity and the historical and contemporary challenges facing communities in the Nordic region.

Developed through artistic collaboration between Northern Norway and Sweden, the production brings together live music, theatrical storytelling, historical perspectives and political reflection in a new stage format described as infotainment.

Rather than presenting music and lectures as separate elements, ÁRRAN integrates them into a shared dramaturgical structure. Musical performances, personal stories and spoken reflections interact throughout the production, creating an accessible and engaging space for audiences to encounter complex cultural and social questions.

Living Languages, Living Cultures

A central principle of ÁRRAN is that Sámi languages and cultures must be approached as living, evolving parts of contemporary society – not as historical relics or traditions belonging exclusively to the past.

The production addresses questions of language preservation, cultural identity, assimilation and the relationship between majority and minority communities. It also explores how historical political decisions continue to influence everyday life, cultural participation and the opportunities available to minority languages today.

By combining artistic expression with information and dialogue, ÁRRAN seeks to encourage curiosity and reflection rather than simply provide answers. The project highlights the importance of cultural diversity and the right of communities to maintain, use and develop their languages and traditions.

A New Artistic Format

ÁRRAN was developed collectively through a workshop-based creative process, bringing together professional musicians and theatre artists with different cultural and artistic backgrounds.

The production combines classical and traditional instruments, vocal performance, improvisation and dramaturgical storytelling. Musical material is arranged and developed in direct dialogue with the spoken narratives, allowing music to become an active part of the storytelling rather than simply an accompaniment.

The artistic team included:

  • Carina Henriksson (Sweden) – soprano, artistic inspiration and workshop leader
  • Roger Norén (Sweden) – piano, accordion and musical development
  • Kristin Solberg (Norway) – dramaturgy, Åarjelhsaemien Teatere / Sydsamisk Teater
  • Maria Frolova (Norway) – viola, musical development and project management
  • Stepan Frolov (Norway) – violin and project coordination
  • Iida Alina Poijärvi (Norway) – cello, KammeRana

The collaboration brought together perspectives from both the Norwegian and Swedish sides of Sápmi, combining regional cultural knowledge with experience in music theatre, classical performance and contemporary storytelling.

From Artistic Development to Public Performance

The main production period took place in Mo i Rana in April 2026, where the artists developed and presented the production through NordSync Lab #3, NordSync Project’s interdisciplinary production laboratory.

Read more about the creative process, participating artists and educational activities in our article: NordSync Lab #3 – Music, Storytelling & Cultural Dialogue Across Borders.

The programme culminated in a public performance on 12 April at Rana Kulturskole, presenting the results of the interdisciplinary collaboration.

The project was also connected to a youth music seminar organised in cooperation with Rødøy Orkesterforening, giving young participants an opportunity to encounter professional artists and explore music and cultural traditions through practical workshops.

ÁRRAN demonstrates how performing arts can serve as a meeting place between cultures, generations and communities – and how international artistic cooperation can contribute to greater understanding of the diverse cultural realities of the North.

The project was supported by BarentsKult and developed through the NordSync network in collaboration with regional cultural partners.
